Executive Summary: The Urgency of Clean Water in Afghanistan
Afghanistan’s water crisis hits hard — and it’s everywhere. Years of stubborn drought, climate shocks, and the steady collapse of rural infrastructure have left communities desperate. The country’s groundwater is running out fast, and millions of families — in remote villages and crowded cities alike — simply don’t have clean drinking water.
When safe water runs out, the fallout is immediate. People have no choice but to use open, unprotected sources. Suddenly, preventable diseases like acute watery diarrhea, cholera, and malnutrition spread. The responsibility for water falls on women and kids, who walk for hours on risky roads every day — losing out on school and work just to bring something drinkable home.
At ADVTP, we roll up our sleeves and tackle these challenges head-on. For over 30 years, our Afghan Development and Vocational Training Program has designed and built water systems that communities can own and sustain. We blend modern groundwater engineering with traditional water know-how. The result? Reliable, life-saving infrastructure that boosts health, saves lives, and helps people adapt to climate extremes.
How We Deliver Reliable Water Solutions
Our engineers design and build water networks that work for Afghanistan’s unique landscapes. We keep systems affordable, effective, and culturally right for each community.
1. Gravity-Fed Pipe Schemes
Fuel-powered pumps don’t really cut it in Afghanistan’s mountainous regions, thanks to steep operating costs and tough logistics. Our answer? Gravity-fed pipes. Nature does the heavy lifting by carrying spring water downhill through tough HDPE pipes, ending up right where people need it.
We start by mapping out water sources and the best routes. Our crews build reinforced intake chambers at springs to keep out contaminants, then install deep, frost-proof pipelines that survive harsh winters. Public tap stands go right in the village centers — so families get their water in minutes, not hours.

2. Deep Borehole Drilling & Solar Water Systems
In dry provinces, shallow wells are running dry as the climate changes. ADVTP drills deep, using precise geophysical surveys to find resilient aquifers and avoid costly, dry wells. Our drilling teams install high-quality PVC casings and gravel packs for decades of clean, stable water.
We power these systems with the sun — no diesel fumes or recurring fuel costs. Solar pumps fill raised storage tanks by day, so clean water is ready to use anytime, day or night.
3. Shallow Well Construction and Upgrades
For smaller villages and emergency IDP camps, quick access to clean water is critical. We build hand-dug wells lined with reinforced concrete, repair old wells, replace broken hand pumps, and deepen or reseal wells that have dried up. Plus, we install solid aprons and drainage to keep the area clean and safe from contamination.
Our Quality Commitment: Clean Water, Safe Communities
We take no shortcuts. Every well and water point we build is tested for chemical safety and bacteria — no one drinks until the water passes. If it doesn’t, we fix it.
We don’t just leave new infrastructure behind: ADVTP forms community water committees and trains them in basic repairs, maintenance, and fund management. Hygiene education goes hand in hand with clean water — we distribute hygiene kits and teach best practices for safe storage and handwashing alongside every technical project.
Why Donors Work With ADVTP
- Deep Field Experience: Since 1991, we’ve built a reputation as on-the-ground experts, fully registered and trusted to deliver in Afghanistan’s toughest settings.
- Skilled Local Teams: Our staff includes top hydrologists, civil engineers, and WASH specialists who know how to get things done.
- Honest Targeting: We put need before politics, choosing project sites based on facts like water scarcity, poverty, and disease outbreaks — not local bias or pressure.
- Transparent Reporting: We keep donors in the loop with GPS-tagged data, before-and-after photos, lab reports, and clear financials for every project.
